Adult – Bible Study
This class focuses on an in-depth study of the Bible. For the past few years discussion has revolved around a lectionary study book that provides comments on each of the weekly scripture readings. The class also draws on other sources for information, such as Bible commentaries or information from Protestants for the Common Good. The class has also used other study books, such as a book specifically focused on Paul’s letters to the Corinthians and a book on looking at parables from different angles.
The class’ purpose is to try to better understand the biblical text – to look at the context in which it was written, to consider the intended audience, to try to understand the message for that time, and then look at what meaning it has for us today. All of this is to help better understand the teachings of Christ and to prepare ourselves “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God.”
Teachers: Cal Audrain and Charles Custer; Location: Hauschild Room
Adult – Contemporary Issues
This class focuses on issues of the day from a Christian perspective. Discussions typically start with a review and analysis of the week’s news events, followed by an in-depth discussion of the book we are currently studying.
We have used most of the “One Book, One Chicago” selections made by the Chicago Public Library. In them we find many timely social issues raised, such as, To Kill a Mockingbird (race relations), The Things They Carried (war), The Ox Bow Incident (criminal justice).
